AP Scores in Perspective

Timberlane is justly encouraged by the recently reported improvement in AP scores for 2015.  They show a marked improvement overall for our district and demonstrate the hard work of our teachers and students.

It is important, however, to put these results in the context of the rest of our state for 2015:

  • 15 subject areas tested at Timberlane
  • 4 subject areas at Timberlane scored higher than the state mean results [Computer Science, English, Environmental Science, European History]
  • 11 subject areas at Timberlane scored lower than the state mean results.

While encouraging and certainly in the right direction, we must keep striving*. A close look at the score breakout by subject back to 2011 is certainly instructive.

*a previous version said we need to get more 1’s and 2’s… that was a brain cramp and thanks to Dr. Metzler for pointing that out.  Obviously we need more 5’s and 4’s!

    The issue with merely comparing how many classes our students outscored the state and how many we underscored is that all students at TRHS taking AP classes are required to take the test. Across NH and the USA as a whole that is not necessarily the case. In many schools students choose 1/2 way through the course whether they’ll take the test or not, thus offering the possibility of artificially inflating a school’s score as weaker student decline. So I am perfectly happy with TRHS’s performance and can’t minimize it with a simple minded but flawed analysis.

    Furthermore, even with this being the 1st year TRHS students all took the tests our overall scores increased. I for one predicted a decrease for the reasons stated in the paragraph above. The fact that overall scores improved is a testament to hard and effective work by our students and teachers. They should be very proud of themselves. Please don’t try and minimize this success.

    BTW: I advocated for this change with the last administration as a newbie SB member and felt stonewalled. I am quite happy that Dr. Metzler implemented 100% testing of AP students.

      Rather than negative personal attack name calling respond to this posting delved into comparison without derogatory name calling as you did, ask why do all the other schools give the option to take AP exams.

      What are the pros/cons at HS level of colleges comparing TRHS overall scores to another HS?

      What reasons would a student take the AP course but not want to take the exam ? Such when the student plans on majoring in college in BIo and predicts the college may want that student take the colleges Bio thus AP course won’t transfer.

      If a student is forced to take AP Exam but knows they won’t be sending score to college, does this effect the effort of the student toward AP exam. And wouldn’t that skew TRHS results.

      Yes, it is impressive the overall % of AP scores of 3 or above went up. But it is NOT “simple minded ” nor is it “flawed analysis”

      The District should be surveying students on why they are taking course a.) don’t want to sit in lower level with behavior and less content/ expectations. b.) want content but know college won’t except my scores due to major etc.

      The district should also be viewing surrounding HS are decreasing AP classes and increasing Dual Enrollment.

      Name calling is not necessary. A deeper view is required.

    Regarding due diligence in backing up statement of surrounding schools are increasing dual enrollment and decreasing AP offerings, two sources are below :

    “In 2014, Salem High School students took 210 dual enrollment courses, up from 147 courses in 2013.”
    “At Timberlane, close to 90 students will be involved with dual enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year..”
    “Through Running Start, high school students pay about $150 a course to earn college credit before graduating high school.”
    “Neither Running Start nor “SNHU in the High School” require students to spend additional money on textbooks or other supplies.”

    Where/How Total #s 308 participants in 28 dual enrollment courses, 188 in Project Running Start and 120 in SNHU courses (includes 5 AP courses).

    Regarding Peter’s statement of :

    From memory , the SB made that decision based on only (2) single separate position of if a student takes the course, he should have to take the exam because he/ she shouldn’t be able to get the higher GPA weighting and we spend a lot of money on these courses.

    There was no documentation no research as to pro/cons, survey of teachers, students, and parents. The SB, who claim they are not educators, made the decision without feedback and looking at options along with a 360 degree viewpoint of pro/cons and has now self proclaimed how right you are with derogatory slings at those who dare to question.
